Ed Pearces St Lukes Hospice Charity Match 15th october 2006 - Tylers Common (Horseshoe Lake)

Weather:
Temp 14- 16 C
Wind Easterly 20mph
Baro: 1022mb falling

15 Anglers met for the 6th & final 2006 St Lukes Hospice Charity Matches organised by Ed Pearce. We had the long walk down to Horseshoe Lake from the car park. We had the middle arm of the lake and sufficient to have every other peg. The draw was made with the usual banter. Boozy was sporting a new bandana which he picked on his recent Holiday to Fuertventura. Looked the business - would this lead to fish?

I picked peg 56 and set up on the pole (I was given advice not to fish to island but in the middle on the pole), I still set up the feeder as well as back up. At the all in drop a bit of marine Groundbait in the spot in the middle and with number 6 elastics and size 18 to 2lb line went for the Silvers first - A few small roach graced the bank but was bumping more than catching and seriously thought about going onto the waggler - the had a minute bite - as lifted found I had something more substantial than a roach - this was a Carp and pulled the elastic half way down to the next peg - it was only a fish of about 1 /12 lb , but gave me great difficulty in landing. Walking back and with the pole pointing 45 degrees behind me - finally managed it. I decided that as I was bumping the small roach on the soft elastic - just as well do it on the stiffer 16 elastic. So went for it and perversely didn’t bump any roach off !!!!! But no big visitors - By this time the wind had really picked up and I went for the feeder. Launched out to the left island and Bingo - a 2lb carp immediately. I kept going with small carp on Treble Maggot (2 red, 1 Yellow) on size 16 and 3lb Hook link. Kept getting carp at regular intervals until 1230 then it went dead until 2.30pm then I had a big one but got my jacket bottom wrap toggle caught in the reel an bang - snapped the hook link. One more small carp and 6 or so Baby perch and Rudd on the feeder later it was All Out.

I had juts over 20lb - Olly Wagg won it with a tab over 44lb and as the points were mentally being applied it looked like a Tie for the Overall Competition between Olly and Paul Pratley and being both equal on wins with two each. Then came the realisation that Paul had finished 6th Today and gained an extra 2 points. So Olly begrudgingly congratulated Paul on the overall Win and the Prize on a new Pole.

Then it was pack up time and that long hard walk up the hill to the Car park – it get harder every year.

Update 17th October:

Today I received my Copy of November's Southern Angler and on checking 'The Guide' for Tylers Common it reads:-

"Horseshoe lake is becoming more popular with those willing to brave the uphill walk back to the car park. Normally a Pole domain, one match was recently won by lobbing a small method feeder over the islands with 80lb. Corn seems to be the best bait. Picking a swim is easy - like the fish just follow the wind."

Well there you have it if only I received this on Saturday - may have gone to the feeder straight from the off and the fish did move off to the other end following the wind when it picked up.

Lee Chapel Sunday League Match - Blasford Hall - Little Waltham 1st October 2006

Weather Just about everything apart from Snow,
Rain, Hail, Sun, Thunder Storms
16- 19°C
S (20 mph)
Relative Humidity (%): 94,
Pressure (mB): 1002, Falling,
Visibility: Very good.

A calm sunny morning belies the overnight rain and what was to come met us at the draw. I decided that rather than waiting to get in a the beginning at the draw that way stand more chance of getting a good peg - Drew 20 which I guess maybe a end peg - Wow - yes it was a corner peg with which could become good if the the warm Southerly blows in later as forecast and non else close - It was either going to be good or really show how a mediocre Angler I am. Mick Wagg was next down on Peg 18 and Terry Middleton and Olly Wagg on the opposite bank. The set-up lacked the normal banter from the triplets of Boozy, Barratt & Gammon all conspicuous by their absence, but Olly soon made up for that asking if I smelled as I was all on my own.

Set up on the Pole at 11m 6ft deep and close in to the RHS in 1 foot for later on.

Olly blew the whistle a little late at 9.02 am and all in we went. Kev Butler was the 1st away (vision of Blind Lane - similar position on the lake. I had a couple of small roach and then as by default the wind picked up - just as if it knew I was at max range on my pole - It soon proved difficult and was getting worse - So switched to the maggot feeder dropping it in @ 11m where I had been feeding on the pole. Instantly had a bream - but the and a couple of small roach - looked like being one of those days. The Owner Bailiff cam round and spoke with everyone - Nice Touch - I was last but gave some advice about laying down some pellet in the corner and getting along the far bank and leaving for 20 minutes - He also said the carp would be up in the corner late in the day and would take any bait - I don't think he knew about the storms we were about to get.

I managed a small mirror and out of the corner of my eyes I could see Mick Wagg (also on the feeder getting the occasional splasher. Terry Middleton; was also having regular small carp - so at the 1/2 Way point honours even - any body's match. The the 1st Thunderstorm and associated wind. Got under the brolly such that all I could see was my rod tip. It was a signal the carp got going - Boy do these guys bite hard - pulling the rod right round. Such that I saw Terry Middleton on the vacant peg with Waggler Rod in Hand casting into my swim - Dropping my head down I could see a stick of carbon in my swim - Terry's Feeder Rod - Manged to hear through the thunder and splattering of rain that he turned round to get his cup and by the time he turned back the rod was in the water - We took turns in trying to hitch the rod - me with my Feeder and Terry with his Waggler - Terry managed to get a hold and retrieved his rod. And the fish was still on. Terry asked about could he land it - the answer was yes but to count he had to land it in is swim - So he had to put a 4lber back. How costly was that going to be ? - Quite a bit as it happens in what is his 1st Lee Chapel Sunday league match.

The anI had an interesting event with my Umbrella - A squall in the storm the wind got underneath and blew the umbrella inside out. A struggle ensued but I managed to to get back to the correct shape and protecting me from the hail.

We had 4 storms all told and each time the carp had a little hello. With facing into the Southerly and the rain, I was only able to underarm the feeder out around 10m to the left of the peg - Amazing that I found where they were shoaled up - A bite a chuck but if only I could land them - but a steady trickle - By this time I had no idea what was going on around the lake. The last 15 minutes proved to pivottable. I had a hard struggle with pretty common got it to the landing at at stretch it lifted its head out of water and shook the hook but laid There in the water I tried to scoop it but still missed. Olly commented -'what are doing' I said that has just 'cost me the match' Never mind rebaited a underhand the feeder back in the zone - and got another sizable chunk straight away then it snapped the hook link (it was not that big) - Oh well put on another size 16 hook link and hey presto another one straight away and again lost at the Net - Arghh!! That is at least 10lb I had lost in the last 15 minutes - i could not help feeling that I had lost the match there. At the whistle it was the chore of packing away win the mud etc -0 but at least the Sun put its head out and kept dry for the weigh-in. I was second to last to weigh-in and found that I was winning by 8oz with 20lb dead=- But we went to Mic Wagg peg - who had a superb Silver Fish Net with the biggest Still water Chub I have seen - 3 of them !! must have been 2lb a piece - But Mick did not weight them - Certainly were Personal best - Then the Carp net came out - I knew then that those lost 3 carp had cost me - The scale went round to 25 Lb - Arrag - 2nd But y best finish of the season.

Mic=k kindly apologised for beating me again but the £25 2nd Pools money softened the blow - oh well there is always next time.
