For the 1st time ever I have won a Senior fishing Match of any description, having won many Junior Sea Angling Matches over 40 years ago – it has been a long time coming and a fitting start to the New Year for me, hopefully the start of good things to come.
The gales that had been a constant in 2007 abated for today another still pretty stiff South Westerly a much more pleasant day with Sunshine throughout although it did prove difficult as I was trying to see my float against the reflections as I fished South from peg 14.
14 Anglers fished the match are were reasonable spread around the lake, the most dense pegs 1-7.
My tactics for the day would be a mix very light tackle on Pole / Feeder with size 22 1lb hook link throughout on the Pole and to 4lb Main line on the feeder which I used the Middy in-line ¾ oz maggot feeder. The hook bait in the main was Single Red maggot although I did try some whites and had a few Roach with.
Started off with the feeder to 2ft of the Island just where the drop off to a depth of 6ft. After a couple of casts – had a nice 4oz Roach and a couple of missed bites and a couple lost – I switched to the pole in the same location with immediate effect – 6 small Roach in the space of an hour. At least I was getting some. I was having to stand to offset the Sun’s reflection but as the Sun moved across from east to West it proved all too difficult so I went back to the Feeder.
At 1230 the tip went round quite purposefully and I slowly pulled into it and after a spirited fight netted a perfect long fit 2lb Common Carp.
Garry enquired how big and said it was a little bigger than his – So I am thinking I could be in with a shout today – But I was unable to keep an eye on Olly down on Peg 6 _ I was facing the other way to shield from the wind – being comfortable was more important.
The capture of the Common seemed to signal the end of the sport for the day –as it must have ran through every cc of water in swim. But looking around it seemed that the whole lake had switched off the only fish being landed by Kev Keeling - a Small Carp (peg 20 something) which he played for 10 minutes or so on his feeder – He was using light gear as well !
Then in a reversal of fortune from the last match when Olly Wagg picked up a match winning Mirror with 20 minutes to go – this time it was my turn. My Tip went round in a slow deliberate movement and off it went – At 1st it did not feel that big but I knew I had to land it to stand any chance of winning the match.
Then it suddenly woke up and tried to kite around the island but I managed to exact enough pressure bearing in mind the size of the hook and line strength to coax it back round and I walked with it up &down between to peg 13 & 15 - It wagged its tail and I was telling it off to shows it mouth rather than the tail.
After 15 minutes it surface like a Bloated submarine. I tried the ‘pull into the net and the Mirror went for one last escape run but had had enough and capitulated and hung on the surface so I was able to slip the net under and out onto the unhooking mat, Just in time for the weigh in. I estimate that it went around 10lb and I had a Total of 14 2oz – A winner by 9lb so without it I would have been 4th.
