Final Lee Chapel Sunday League Match 4th March 2006 LCL - Olly Blanks Again - Remaining podium places Go down to the Wire
Weather:
Temp 3>10°C
Wind SE (17 mph)
Overcast /Drizzle / Rain
Relative Humidity (%): 95,
Pressure (mB): 1005, Falling,
Having woke up to a crisp misty still morning whilst walking the Dog I knew that it would not be that for long: The Weather forecast predicted 20mph South Easterly wind with rain from 1100 am onwards.
That meant that we were able to draw and get set up in relative comfort. But that is where my good fortune ended. What I needed to do to hold onto a League trophy place was to finish above Kev Keeling or Steve Barrett and draw a rod bank peg (At the start of the day I was holding onto 2nd place by 1 point from Kev and 3 from Steve).
My session on Friday indicated that the fish were in the deeper water but with the pressure dropping and substantial rain we had in the intervening period there may be an off chance that they may come up shallow.
What did I draw - Peg 23 on the meadow bank - well at least I would have the expected wind & rain on my back and not fishing into it, But Kev and Steve picked Road bank Pegs 10 & 14 respectively. Not a good sign.
I decided to fish the same tactics as I did the previous Friday - Waggler and bomb - In fact only tried one short stint of the Bomb (no Bite) so most of the day spent on the Waggler fishing 3-6 inches over depth - coming shallow or dead depth could not get a bite - Had the 2BB Insert Waggler dotted right down (2 no 4's as the bulk and four no 8,s shirt button style down to 1lb line to Size 20 hook. - I struck on any slight lift or drop.
Fished straight out at 20 feet in to the deepest I could go without going into Gary Somerfields swim. I had a couple of Small Roach then a slow glide away bite - I knew I had something more substantial - did not fight much but definitively a small carp of 2-3lbs.
Arghh! Pulled the hooked - Question from Kev - what you argghing for - "just lost a nice Fish was my retort". I sensed that that is where I was to lose my trophy spot,
But I recast an straight away I had the same take. - Could it be the same fish I thought - It fought almost exactly the same. However I managed to get this one safely to the net. A small Black common of around 1 1/2 Lb - Boozy who was adjacent to me on peg 21 said "that its Blakey you have won". My response - there's is a long way to go (it was only 0930).
I announced that this is the same fish I lost 3 minutes earlier.
Steve Barrett was getting a Roach a chuck some nice ones too , Kev was struggling getting the odd 1 or 2 small Roach. I was catching 3 then loosing 1 in short spats, keeping a beady eye on what was going on with Steve & Kev and not paying enough attention to what I was doing.
Using the same rig set up as on did on Friday -when I did not lose any fish but today I was loosing every fourth including two nice 3/4 Lb roach - How costly would those losses by I thought to myself.
Gary was catching sporadically as well - small roach - and on one occasion shouted across to me that this was the same fish he lost earlier - proudly holding up a 1/2 oz Roach.
Right on cue at 11:00 the wind picked up and it started to rain - for a short period then returned with a vengeance at 12:30. On putting up their Brollies - One Guy (sorry I don't know his Name) had his brolly turn inside out. Everyone else on the road bank opted for waterproof & sit out approach, Those of us on the meadow bank were sitting nice & snug.
So concerned I was with how Kev & Steve were doing I did not Notice that Mick Byrne had caught a nice bream down on peg 7. Couldn't see what Olly was up to on Peg 18 but appeared to be very Little. Boozy bagged himself a couple of Nice Tench on the Bomb from mid lake.
Steve's catch rate slowed after midday - whilst Kev's picked up - at this stage I think Steve had more weight than me but I felt confident that I was ahead of Kev - still holding onto that trophy spot. However my swim went completely dead - I went into the left hand side closer in - thinking perhaps with the pressure drop and the rain they might have come shallower - Action from small roach straight away but missing bites came up to 2" over depth and starter to make more of the bites.
It's Five Past Two , I looked up and see Kev's elastic (maybe a 4 ) pulled out and a the fish making its way to Basildon. Kev caressed it back and when it surfaced found to be a Monster Perch. Kev Safely netted and I had that deflated feeling - Oh well there is always next year.
At the final whistle the curtain came down on another good League Season, with those minor places still very much anyone's.
The weighed in started - I'm first to go with 5Lb, 2oz, then Boozy with 4lb 9oz. Olly BLANKED Again. Gary suggested that we have a look at the rules to see if there is anything regarding Champions and Blanking. Gary made the suggestion earlier in the day that a double blank counts as minus 50 points. All good banter of course - It's what you do over the course of the season not just 2 matches that count.
Round we went to Steve - the net is slowly drawn out of the water by Steve - I am sure for dramatic purposes. As soon as I see it the bag of Roach I just know it is more than my weight- and sure enough it makes 6lb dead. At that point I knew that I was about to finish 3rd on the day and 4th overall - Kev's Perch had to go 3lb plus his good bag of Roach.
Next is Kev and as soon as the scales go past 5lb and Boozy made the comment - Blakey's turned away - how right he was. Kev's Perch went 2lb 10oz - A really good fish to finish the Season on and worthy of taking 2nd Place alone.
Last to weigh in was Mick Byrne with one Fish the lovely Bream that went 3lb 10z
I sulked off back to my peg to pack up and pondered what might have been, but 1/2 way round my left boot got stuck in the mud and with the walking motion all in one off came my boot and into the mud went my socked foot. Summed it up really didn't it. Well Gary did ask earlier for me to fall in as he was getting bored. I jokingly said I 'd try my best to give some entertainment so at least I did give something to laugh about at the end of the day. Mind you made it interesting packing up and walking around with one boot off and one on in the mud and standing water - Surprisingly was not that cold !
So the curtain comes down on a varied and interesting Match Season where 3254Lb of fish was weighed in over the 12 matches an Avergae of 244lb per Match
